On the 20th May we held our first (of many we hope) Race Night at the indoor bowls club in Huntington. This is a participation event, there is no sitting back to watch the horses at our race nights, in fact there aren’t even any horses! Lining up on the starting blocks were 8 fully fit, thoroughbred pull along camels!
Clearly this was going to be a competitive night and the first 8 races were tightly contested by our ‘jockeys’ for a place in the grand final. Each race eagerly cheered on by the 100 strong crowd.
Half time saw a break for well earned food and drinks, but also an opportunity to present Pete who retired as GSL at the end of 2016 with a few mementos to thank him for his many years at the group and a valuable contribution to Scouting. Thanks Pete, and happy retirement!
Post the mid-session interval the racing recommenced (possibly even more competitive) before culminating in the Grand Final, one of our former scout leaders proved a dark horse (or should that be camel) and came from the back to take the overall prize!
A great event, and one that couldn’t have happened without our race sponsors, the fantastic organising committee and those that helped on the night, but also all those parents, members, family and friends of the group who attended. We hope you had just as much fun as we did.
The camels are back at the stable and in training for next time…
